At least 19 illegal migrants, mostly from Africa, have been killed in a truck crash in the Libyan town of Bani Walid, approximately 189 kilometres south-east of the capital Tripoli, AP reported.

Another 60 were injured when the truck overturned on Wednesday. It is unclear what caused the accident with the victims hailing mostly from Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan.

Libya has become a major point of departure for African migrants leaving Africa for Europe in search of a better life.

The journey is hazardous with many crammed into overcrowded vessels in poor condition operated by human traffickers.

Hundreds have died after the boats overturned in the Mediterranean and those that have remained behind have been subjected to abuse in detention centres.

Many of the detention centres are controlled by a myriad of militias who control large swathes of the country after it plunged into civil war in 2011 following the overthrow of late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
