The Springboks Monopoly board game is a twist on the classic Monopoly. Participants travel around the board and buy their favourite Springbok players and rugby stadiums, negotiating with opponents in an attempt to build a rugby empire. Instead of the original top hat, car and shoe, Springbok Monopoly will feature 6 rugby-inspired tokens. Monopolists will use ‘Springbok Currency’ to fund their expansion, build stands and stadiums and trade their way to success. The original ‘Go to Jail’, ‘Free Parking’ and ‘Collect 200 as you pass Go’ features will remain. The creators of the game have remained tight-lipped on the player selection for the Monopoly board, leading to speculation around who will make the cut and how the players will be ranked. The biggest question mark is which players will be the face of the most expensive property. Will it be Siya Kolisi who made history when he became captain last year; will it be Pieter-Steph Du Toit – the SA Rugby Player of the Year, Malcolm Marx – the best No.2 in the world or could it be the most-loved Bok, ‘The Beast’?
A card game as part of the popular ‘Top Trumps’ series has also been developed. The cards will feature key facts on selected Springbok players. These include year of birth, height, caps, tries and the ‘Top Trumps Rating’ which parallels the player’s ‘Tackle Rating’. There is just one ‘Trump Card’, with the highest ratings in the pack, and there have been many theories as to which player this will be. "We are always busy looking for games to play while being on tour. This will definitely be our new favourite and I can't wait to compete and play this along with my team-mates," says Damian Willemse. "Board games are really fun and interactive to play as a family. As for featuring in it, well I'm sure my kids will have a good laugh if they see their dad” says Warren Whiteley.
There will also be a Waddingtons 52-card deck of playing cards with action shots of Springboks from recent years – but who will be the Aces in the Pack and who will be the Jokers?
The Springboks were ‘christened’ in 1906 and have been one of the game’s leading teams ever since. They made their World Cup debut in 1995 and went on to win both the 1995 and the 2007 titles. This is the first time they have featured on these classic games. It remains to be seen whether South Africans compete in the games with the same passion and competitive spirit as the Springboks show on the field.
Customers can expect to find Springbok Monopoly, playing cards and Top Trumps cards in-store and online mid-August.
